2011-2012 RCC Confirmation
At RCC, our hope for every student in the youth ministry is that they develop and maintain a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We believe that Confirmation is a very important piece of this relationship, but it is not an end in and of itself. We see confirmation as a faith journey, not just a class. We believe that confirmation should help each student see the importance of God’s word, learn about our Covenant denomination, learn how to apply biblical concepts to everyday life, and continue journeying with Christ.
This year’s confirmation (2011-2012) will look a bit different than it has in the past. We have been working hard at trying to make our Confirmation process as effective as it can be.
The confirmation process at RCC is now a 4 stage process and now looks as follows:
Journal Completion
Monthly Sunday “check-ins”
Retreats
Online activity
We are asking that the parents and students complete the JOURNALS together, on the same schedule. We want to affirm spiritual growth in the home and empower parents to complete the journals with their students. As a result of this, we are confident that students will be able to get the most out of the journaling experience that confirmation provides. With students and parents going through the journals together, our hope is that they will keep each other on track and if there is an opportunity for discussion- they can interact with their child at the involvement level of their choice.
The SUNDAY “CHECK-INS” will happen once per month and give the confirmation class some time to meet consistently and work through things in the journal that might need more explanation and/or study. Where this will serve as some teaching time, it will also allow the student to meet and have fun together, stay “on track” together, and take care of any “business” issues that come up for the confirmation class.
RETREATS will happen 3-4 times during the year. This is where the bulk teaching will happen. Different pastors will be drawn in for teaching to help get the students familiar with them as well as to help teach and pull out important themes that they have been learning about through the journals and check-in Sundays. Overall, the retreats will allow for the students to have time together to play games, hang out, get questions answered and learn about the important themes and applications that they have been going through with their parents in the journals.
Online Activity will be instated this year to give students an avenue to interact with each other, the confirmation teachers, and other pastors outside of the classroom setting. To start, a teacher or another pastor will use the online confirmation site to discuss materials that students have been studying a well as to allow the student to ask deeper questions. This site will be through Facebook, will be monitored regularly and will be utilized as little or as much as it seems to benefit the confirmation experience as a whole.
